Ingredients:

  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped green bell pepper
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, baking soda, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine the buttermilk, water, and beaten egg. Mix well.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
  4. Fold in the finely chopped onion and green bell pepper.
  5. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Using a spoon or small scoop, carefully drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pot.
  7. Fry the hush puppies for 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy on the outside.
  8. Use a slotted spoon to remove the hush puppies from the oil and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
  9. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
