Ingredients:
- 2 heads of cabbage
- 2 lbs ground beef
- 3 cups cooked rice
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp garlic
- 1 tbsp parsley
- 2 slices diced onion
- 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
- 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
- 1/4 cup tomato sauce (for the meat mixture)
- Salt & Pepper to taste
Preparation:
- Prepare Cabbage:
- Place a head of cabbage in a pot of boiling water.
- Peel off the cabbage leaves one at a time as they soften.
- Cut off the rough part at the end of each cabbage leaf with a sharp knife.
- Prepare Filling:
- In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, cooked rice, egg, garlic, parsley, diced onion, 1/4 cup tomato sauce, salt, and pepper.
- Assemble Rolls:
- Place a small amount of the meat mixture (about the size of a sausage) on a cabbage leaf.
- Roll up the cabbage leaf like a fajita and place it seam side down in a casserole dish.
- Optionally, place a few cabbage leaves and some tomato sauce on the bottom of the casserole dish to prevent the rolls from burning.
- Cook Rolls:
- Pour the crushed tomatoes over the cabbage rolls.
- Cover the dish and bake at 375ºF for approximately 75 minutes.
- Reduce oven temperature to 325ºF and continue baking for about 90 more minutes, until the cabbage is tender. Baste every hour.
- Serve:
- Serve the cabbage rolls with tomato sauce.
